Considered to be one of the wildest regions of Wales, Y Mynydd Du (the Black Mountain) forms the westernmost range of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. The highest point is Fan Brycheiniog (802m), but it also includes the “Carmarthen Fans” – Waun Lefrith, Picws Du and Fan Foel. The peaks form a ridge having steep north-facing escarpments that overlook two small lakes – Llyn-y- Fan Fawr and Llyn-y-Fan Fach – in hollows formed by glacial action in the Ice Age. Although a wilderness now, there is archaeological evidence of Stone Age and Bronze Age habitation.

All our walks are circular and start on the eastern side of the Black Mountain near Tafarn-y-Garreg.

A party: The A walk Starts from Tafarn-y-Garreg (SN850172) in a SW direction along the A4067 to Glyntawe and joins the path through the camp site then turns north towards Carreg Haffes, and continues NW walking uphill across open fellside which includes an interesting mix of scenery with limestone pavements, shake holes and rock outcrops, fording several streams to the summits of Carnau’r Carreg Las and Carreg yr Ogof. The walk then descends to a broad col continuing in an easterly direction climbing steeply over the flank of Waun Lefrith to reach the escarpment of Bannau Sir Gaer where Lyn y Fan Fach lies 200m below. The walk progresses east along the red sandstone escarpment over the summits of Picws Du and Fan Foel, turns south over Fan Brycheiniog (802m) and Fan Hir before gradually descending to the finish at Tafarn-y-Garreg (SN850172).
